California’s Most Historic Hotel
The site of the Hotel del Coronado first dates back over 1,000 years ago when it was settled by Native Americans who used the site as a camp. When the Spanish began to explore California in the 1600s they explored and surveyed the peninsula of the hotel’s current location but it remained bare for over two hundred years. Not wanting the pristine landscape to go to waste several local investors dreamed of creating a luxury hotel and resort and purchased the land in the 1880s. The groundwork for the resort began in 1886 and was designed by the Reid Brothers, architects from Evansville, Indiana.
On completion of the hotel, it immediately gained a very popular reputation with California locals and became a premier destination for beach enthusiasts. As its reputation grew, so too did its clientele and traditions. The resort became popular for its aerial and equestrian shows and began to host families from around the world, celebrities, and even royalty. The beautiful design of the building has made it a very popular location for filming and has been used most famously in Some Like It Hot.
Today, the Hotel del Coronado remains a popular destination to stay for people traveling to San Diego but it is perhaps more known for its museum and tours. The museum offers several permanent and rotating tours as well as exhibits that explore the history of the museum and the San Diego area. Many of these exhibits rotate so returning guests will almost always see something new and extraordinary every time they go back. One of the most popular activities is the walking tour, which shows visitors the stunning architecture of the resort as well as several other historical points of interest. Touring the Hotel del Coronado is a perfect diversion once the Continuing Education Company CME conference is done for the day. Whether you are interested in history, nature, or architecture the Coronado Museum has something for everyone.
