Charleston’s Historic Harbor
Charleston harbor is known as much for its gorgeous ocean views as its rich history. The city has a long history of being an important harbor for shipping, trade, and naval training. One of the best ways for tourists to explore this rich history is to visit Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum.
This museum is located right on the harbor and allows guests to climb aboard numerous different ships as well as explore the complex naval history of the United States. The museum has a wide collection of many different boats for guests to tour but the crown jewel of the fleet has to be the USS Yorktown. The Yorktown was originally commissioned for her service in World War Two where she played a pivotal role in the Pacific Theater. After the war ended, the ship was altered to accommodate jet fighters. In the last few years of her service, the Yorktown even recovered the Apollo 8 astronauts on their return to Earth. After the boat was decommissioned, she was given to Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum in 1973. All of this rich history and more can be explored by guests when they visit. One of the most exciting aspects of the museum is its engine room experience. The engine room has been recently renovated and retrofitted with modern technology to allow guests an immersive experience of history. The engine room tour includes numerous touch screens and virtual tours that let visitors explore what life was like onboard. Guests can even see a hologram of a sailor fixing a leak.
