Get to Know Georgia O’Keeffe of Sante Fe

Georgia O’Keeffe was an influential American artist for nearly seven decades. Her independent spirit showcased her unique vision.

From flowers, landscapes, and even bones, Georgia O’Keeffe’s works display her keen insight of the world around her. Her works were based on her observations of nature and were also related to places where she lived.

Though she was born in Wisconsin and lived most of her young adult life in New York, it was New Mexico that forever changed her. Her first trip to New Mexico in 1929 had an immediate effect on her work, as well as a lasting impact on her life. Over the following 20 years (from 1929 to 1949) she made nearly annual trips to New Mexico, sometimes staying six months, painting some of her most famous pieces. Her works would then be exhibited every winter when she returned to New York. She permanently moved to New Mexico in 1949. When she passed away in 1986 at 98 years old, her ashes were scattered over the New Mexico landscape that she so dearly loved. Her legacy of over 900 painting has continued to inspire modern artists and connoisseurs to this day.

During your visit to Santa Fe, it is only fitting that you visit the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum. The museum offers insight not only into her paintings but also her creative process and the landscape that inspired her. In addition to the museum itself in Santa Fe, the O’Keeffe Museum maintains O’Keeffe’s two homes and studios in northern New Mexico, a research center and library, and a variety of collections relating to O’Keeffe and modern art.

Her home and studio in Abiquiu, which is approximately an hour north of Santa Fe, is a national historic landmark and considered one of the most important artistic sites in America. The home is where she lived and worked and is open for tours by appointment. The Georgia O’Keeffe Museum Research Center opened in July 2001 and is dedicated to the study of American Modernism (late nineteenth century – present). It also sponsors research in art history, literature, music, photography, and other fields.

Make sure to check out this important American artist during your trip to Santa Fe.
