Hike through the Beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains
Asheville has been well known for its beautiful scenery since it was first founded in the 1700s with numerous writers, politicians, and tourists visiting the city to escape the hustle and bustle of their daily lives.
The city has kept its reputation as one of the premier hiking locations in the eastern United States and because the city is so close to numerous different National and State Parks there’s plenty of options to choose from whether you are a complete novice or experienced hiker. The city is nestled within the Blue Ridge Mountains, a subrange of the mighty Appellation Mountain, at the meeting of two rivers.
If it’s your first time in Asheville or you are uncertain of where to start exploring this majestic scenery a good place to start is Great Smoky National Park. The pristine beauty of this part of the Blue Ridge Mountains is unparalleled and the numerous different hiking trails will provide hours of quiet solitude and amazing views of rivers, trees, and wildflowers. Along your journey, you may even get the chance to see one or more of the animals who call the park their home including fish, birds, deer, or even bears. The park is only an hour’s drive away from the city so it would be the perfect stop on your way to the city or as a perfect day trip if you’re interested in a beautiful hike.
One of the most visited destinations in all of Asheville is Mount Mitchell State Park and for good reason as this peak is the highest in the eastern United States. Located just nineteen miles away from the city the peak stands at a mighty 6694 feet and offers plenty of panoramic views of the surrounding Blue Ridge mountain range. The park also offers guests plenty of other opportunities to interact with nature with plenty of hiking trails, a restaurant, and even a museum to explore the history and geography of the amazing site.
Perhaps the greatest hidden gem of Asheville is Blue Ridge Parkway known to many as one of the prettiest drives in the United States. Whether you’re interested in exploring nature from the comfort of your car or are looking for a romantic getaway there are plenty of amazing mountain views from all sides of your car with numerous different viewing platforms along the way if you want to stop and get a better view. Blue Ridge Parkway is also home to numerous different hiking trails scattered throughout its long and scenic drive ranging in difficulty from easy to moderate. The trails all have pristine views of nature and solitude. A few of the most popular trails include Linville Falls, Frying Pan Tower, and Graveyard Fields. Linville Falls is perhaps the most photographed waterfall in the state of North Carolina and the short length of the trail makes it a perfect stop for anyone driving down this beautiful road. Frying Pan Tower is the perfect trail for anyone looking to photograph the amazing Blue Ridge scenery. The climbable tower is perfect for admiring the panoramic views and lets you take in nature like nowhere else in Asheville. Despite its morbid name Graveyard Fields would be the perfect trail to hike on a still sunny day. Along this route, you’ll be able to walk through mighty hardwood forests and immense fields of wildflowers in full bloom.
Besides the amazing history and culture of the city of Asheville, its biggest draw continues to be the chance to see nature in its most raw and beautiful. It doesn’t matter if you are interested in mountains, river gorges, forests, waterfalls, or wildlife you’ll get the chance to explore all of these and so much more if you decide to attend the National Hospitalist Conference in the amazing city of Asheville, North Carolina.
