Nature, Art, and Sunsets in Santa Fe

Even though the American Southwest is already known for its ruggedly beautiful landscapes and brilliant sunsets which can be seen just about anywhere; one of the best places to explore this beauty can be found in Santa Fe.

If you’re looking for a way to get in touch with nature and enjoy learning about history you should visit the Randall Davey Audobon Center and Sanctuary. Spread across 135 acres of pristine Southwest landscape this area is home to 190 unique species of birds some of which are among the rarest in the country. The sanctuary has both well-tended gardens and plenty of hiking trails to explore. You may also explore Randall Davey’s home and studio to learn a little about the history of the site which dates back over 1000 years.

Randall Davey was among many of the artists in the early twentieth century that moved to New Mexico to explore its natural beauty. A few of the other famous artists in the who moved to the area were Georgia O’Keefe and Frank Lloyd Wright. Davey was a highly influential landscape and figure painter who took inspiration from the local beauty of the area. His loose and poetically contrasting style are still studied by contemporary painters looking to add more personality and artistic flair into their pieces. As you explore his studio and home as well as the grounds around the estate you may notice the unmistakable influence the surrounding landscape and color had on his pieces.

Another unique place to explore is the Cross of the Martyrs which is one of the most overlooked historical sites in all of Santa Fe. So if you’re looking for a quiet and unique place to explore and view a spectacular sunset you cannot go wrong by visiting this site. Standing at 25 feet tall this reinforced concrete cross stands atop Pasco de la Loma Hill in Fort Marcy Park and is a memorial to the 21 Franciscan priests and numerous Spanish settlers who lost their lives during the Pueblo revolt of 1680. You can explore this history of so much more by putting this site on your must-see list while visiting Santa Fe.
