Ringing in New Orleans’ Tricentennial in 2018

New Orleans, Louisiana is a city known across the world for its colorful flair, extravagant Mardis Gras celebration and its blend of French, African, Spanish and American cultures.

Also known as the “Big Easy,” the city of New Orleans boasts boisterous street celebrations and carnivals, night life and bold Louisiana creole cuisine. New Orleans is also known as the birthplace of jazz, with a jazz boom in the 1900s. The history of New Orleans and its unique traditions go back hundreds of years since its founding.

In fact, 2018 is a very special year for the city of New Orleans as the city prepares to celebrate its 300th anniversary. This special tricentennial landmark at the start of 2018 will usher in many events and celebrations in order to commemorate this special anniversary. New Orleans was founded back in 1718 by Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne, Sieur de Bienville and was controlled by the French up until 1763. In 1763, New Orleans was taken over by the Spanish, and then went back into French hands in 1803. That same year, New Orleans was sold to the United States during the Louisiana Purchase.

Popular landmarks in New Orleans such as the French Quarter were formed during the founding years of the city. With Hurricane Katrina continuing to leave the city with devastating repercussions from its wake in 2005, the city is in a state of rebuild, with special projects and city infrastructure improvements scheduled to take place during the 300th anniversary year. Some of the special projects include building a new airport and updating the New Orleans Riverfront, an urban park for the public. Another special project that is being initiated during New Orleans’ 300th year is the restoration of Gallier Hall, a historic building that operated as the New Orleans city hall from 1853 up until 1956.

The 2018 NOLA Commission is a committee that has been put together by Mayor Mitchell Landrieu to focus on hosting special events and overseeing projects tied to the Tricentennial anniversary. For New Orlean’s 300th anniversary as a city, the Commission will be focusing on its people’s strength and resiliency. The city and many of its citizens have been through incredibly tough times through natural disaster, home destruction, displacement and more. The city will use this milestone to strengthen its city and people for the next 300 years to come.
