Take a Stroll through Charleston’s Most Popular Park
If you’re looking for a nice place to kick back and relax on your Charleston vacation than look no further than taking some time to enjoy the city’s most popular and iconic park Marion Square. This ten-acre plot of land is as important to the city of Charleston as much as it is to the state of South Carolina itself. First acquired by the colony of South Carolina in 1758 the grounds first served as a defensive border against Native Americans. As the colony expanded and eventually joined the United States the wall was no longer needed and deconstructed. However, the grounds continued to serve as a historically important place for both the military and merchants of South Carolina. Among the ground’s most famous uses include the city’s tobacco inspection grounds and as a parading ground for Citadel Military College when it became known as Citadel Square. The site didn’t lose its importance after the college moved in the early 1920s and locals continued to frequent the area. The park was eventually renamed to Marion Square after Revolutionary War leader Francis Marion.
You can enjoy the park during Continuing Education Company’s annual Hypertension, Diabetes & Dyslipidemia CME Conference. The park also features a weekly Farmer’s Market and annual Holiday Market every December. If you’re looking for a unique souvenir or want to savor the flavor of local produce the Farmer’s Market takes place every Saturday from 8 till two. If you’re looking to take a break from the hustle and bustle of the city or just want to take a walk through some greenery than be sure to take a detour to this lovely park. If you walk along the park’s outer edges you can get plenty of amazing views of the city’s amazing architecture.
