Take a Drive Through Classic Beachfront Florida

Palm Coast, Florida is centrally located, making it the perfect spot to take in all that sunny Florida has to offer.

In fact, Palm Coast is located along Florida State Road A1A. Florida State Road A1A is a scenic and historic coastal byway, stretching from Fernandina Beach just below the Georgia-Florida line to Key West at the southernmost tip of the state. This National Scenic Byway goes directly through oceanfront towns and has stretches that run parallel to the Atlantic Ocean. The majority of the coastal byway runs through Florida’s coral islands, known as Florida’s East Coast Barrier Islands, and is set apart from mainland Florida by the Intracoastal Waterway.

Florida State Road A1A

What makes A1A so unique is that it truly gives visitors a taste of classic Florida beach culture. The concept of beach culture in the United States stemmed from this very scenic byway lining the Atlantic Florida coast. Decorated with coastal waters and lush tropical greenery, A1A has been a long-standing icon in American history. Through the decades, the A1A has drawn in spring breakers and is known as “the strip” in Fort Lauderdale as well as in Daytona Beach. Before 1945, A1A was divided up in a number of state roads. In 1945, it was renumbered to be State Road 1. However, this numbering quickly became confusing with U.S. Highway 1 that runs parallel to it, and was renamed State Road A1A in 1946 instead.

When visiting Flagler County, a must-stop along the iconic State Road A1A is the Flagler Beach Pier and Boardwalk. The pier is the perfect place to look out over the ocean or take your turn at fishing. The Flagler Beach community is over 100 years old with the pier serving as one of the community cornerstones.

Funky Pelican Restaurant

Also located along the A1A is the Flagler Beach Pier and Boardwalk is the Funky Pelican Restaurant. The Funky Pelican Restaurant is known for their fun takes on coastal classics, including clam chowder, cajun gator bites, fish mac and more. Enjoy the boardwalk views while chowing down on some fresh seafood and a delicious selection of burgers and sandwiches. The Funky Pelican is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner with hours subject to change. To view the restaurant menu, click here.

Whether you are looking for some beach relaxation time or want to cruise down the A1A to take in the sights, sounds, smells, and tastes of the Florida coast, Palm Coast and Flagler Beach are the perfect places to visit. Drive down historic A1A and see how Old Florida still exists today.
