Created in partnership with Hospital Procedure Consultants, this online course bundle provides current, evidence-based information about the 20 most common bedside procedures performed in the emergency room, intensive care unit, and hospital wards. This course is expected to be completed prior to your in-person workshop in October 2023, as it will provide you with a solid foundation to maximize the benefits of the live workshop. Offered by the well-established Hospital Procedures Consultants, the in-person workshop will allow ample hands-on instruction and individualized instruction and individualized education with the goal that every participant develops the knowledge and skills necessary to begin performing these diagnostic bedside ultrasounds upon returning to work.
The workshop participants will be split into smaller groups and will rotate between five ultrasound stations to gain hands-on experience with expert guidance.
The Point-of-Care Ultrasound Workshop will include the following procedures:
- Echocardiography
- Assess LV contractility and wall motion abnormalities, assess for right ventricular enlargement
- Assess for pericardial effusion
- Assess volume status using IVC diameter and respiratory variation)
- Pleura ultrasound to assess for a pneumothorax
- Vascular ultrasound to identify neck vessels and peripheral veins as targets for vascular access
- Identify cardiac pathology on our advanced HeartWorks simulator
Learning Objectives:
Upon the completion of this hands-on workshop, participants should be able to:
- Describe important functions of the point-of-care ultrasound machine and demonstrate how to use that functionality
- Demonstrate proper probe positioning used to obtain adequate views of the heart, pleura, IVC and central and peripheral veins
- Identify anatomy and anatomic relationships on the ultrasound screen
- Recognize and describe ultrasound findings that indicate anatomic and physiologic derangements

Offered by the well-established Hospital Procedures Consultants, the course is unique in that the didactic portion of the program is covered in a series of online lectures that are available on any internet-enabled device. These modules review all of the specifics of how to perform a wide spectrum of procedures and include step-by-step instructions and actual videos of the procedures being performed from start-to-finish.
The lectures and videos are intended to be viewed prior to the live workshop so that you can hit the ground running and focus your time on actually performing the procedures under the careful supervision and instruction of procedural expert physicians during the workshop.
The Hospital and Critical Care Procedures Workshop will include the following procedures:
- Ultrasound-guided central line placement
- Landmark-guided central line placement
- Intraosseous line placement using the EZ-IO
- Ultrasound-guided peripheral IV placement
- Endotracheal intubation
- Laryngeal mask airway placement
- The King Airway tube placement
- Stylet-guided intubations
- Glidescope intubations
- Lumbar puncture
- Spine ultrasound to aid in ultrasound-guided lumbar punctures
- Ultrasound-guided paracentesis
- Ultrasound-guided thoracentesis
Learning Objectives:
Upon the completion of this hands-on workshop, participants should be able to:
- Define the indications and contraindications for these emergency department procedures
- Identify the pertinent anatomy, patient positioning and proper technique for these emergency department procedures
- Identify the common complications of the various emergency department procedures
- Choose the appropriate management of complications should they occur
- Choose appropriate options for oral or intravenous procedural sedation
- Utilize the ultrasound to assist with emergency department procedures
- Understand the basic principles of mechanical ventilation
- Properly code and document for these emergency department procedures

ABIM MOC: Successful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the evaluation component, enables the participant to earn up to 5.75 Medical Knowledge MOC points for the Point-of-Care Ultrasound Pre-Conference Workshop or 5 Medical Knowledge MOC points for the Hospital and Critical Care Procedures Workshop in the American Board of Internal Medicine's (ABIM) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. Participants will earn MOC points equivalent to the amount of CME credits claimed for the activity. It is the CME activity provider's responsibility to submit participant completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABIM MOC credit.
To receive CME credit and/or MOC points, you MUST complete the activity and the evaluation form. For ABIM MOC points, your information will be shared with the ABIM through the ACCME Program and Activity Reporting System (PARS). Please allow 6-8 weeks for your MOC points to appear on your ABIM records.
