Asheville, North Carolina is one of the must visit cities of the moment. It combines the amazing history and unique destinations of a city with the charm of a small town where there is plenty to explore and do. One of the biggest draws to Asheville is the amazing scenery all around. Located adjacent to the Blue Ridge Mountains where the Swannosa and French Broad rivers meet you’re never too far away from pristine beauty. In fact, Asheville is one of the most popular places for hikers as the city is close to nine National Parks and numerous rivers and waterfalls. If you decide to drive to Asheville or rent a car while you’re down here be sure to take a trip down Blue Ridge Parkway, widely known as one of the most scenic drives in the United States.
Besides its obvious scenic beauty, the city is also known for its rich history and culture. First founded by John Burton with a tiny population of under a thousand settlers, the site of the city was first known as Morristown and Buncombe Courthouse before being officially incorporated in 1797 and named after then-governor Samual Ashe. The city would slowly grow before experiencing a brief boom when railroads began to expand across the United States in the 1800s. The city would get its first claim to fame when George Vanderbilt constructed his luxurious Biltmore Mansion which remains the single largest residence ever constructed in the United States. Attendees at the National Hospitalist Conference, organized by Continuing Education Company, will have a chance to explore this amazing estate. Following in Vandbilt’s footsteps many luxurious hotels began to be constructed around Asheville promising guests an amazing mountain getaway with the opulence of a royal estate. Asheville would continue to expand during the 1920s and this time frame gave the city some of the best examples of Art Deco architecture in the United States.
Asheville also holds a unique history with the arts which persists to this day. Many famous American authors hold ties to the city including O. Henry, Thomas Wolfe, and F. Scott Fitzgerald. Both Wolfe and Henry’s graves may be visited today in Riverside Cemetery. Asheville keeps the spirit of the arts alive today with its numerous investments in visual art and hosting numerous different music festivals throughout the year.
