Explore One of the Best Beaches at Delnor Wiggins State Park
One of the best parts of any vacation is the chance to explore the intricacies of a new place. Every city offers visitors a unique palette of history, culture, sightseeing destinations, and cuisine you can’t find anywhere else.
Even though cities are certainly plenty of fun to explore, one of the best parts about vacation is the chance to get away from the hustle and bustle of our everyday lives. Perhaps the best way to take a step back, relax, and reflect is to explore nature. Just as every city offers a unique experience for every visitor, every park and nature preserve offers a unique assortment of wildlife to explore. Even though it isn’t widely known, the Delnor Wiggins Pass State Park in Naples, Florida is one of the most pristine beaches in the state and would make for the perfect getaway if you decide to join us at our CME CEC conference in Florida this year.
Delnor Wiggins Pass State Park
With it’s long stretches of white smooth sand, it’s no wonder that this site has always attracted people. Before the European colonization of America the area of Southwest Florida was once home to the Calusa people. A Native American tribe that once numbered around fifty thousand strong and were feared as fierce warriors. The Calusa were known for digging large channels and creating mounds that can still be seen in the park today.
The tribe depended on the ocean as their primary food source and fished all along the coastline in dugout canoes. Besides their fearsome reputation for marauding the Calusa were known as shell collectors. Unlike a lot of tribes who created intricate works of pottery, these peoples were known for using shells for a variety of creative and intricate purposes including tools such as fishing hooks and for jewelry. Archeological work done in the park has uncovered huge stockpiles of shells intended for later use. Florida was one of the first areas ever explored by European settlers. In fact the Calusa were the first tribe ever written about by Spanish explorers in the area. Due to widespread disease and warfare the Calusa population drastically declined and their once rich culture has died out. Although they are gone their reputation and unique history can be explored and celebrated in the park today.
The park gets its name in part from the first person to settle in the region, Joe Wiggins who established a trading post in the region. This trading post served as an important communication point between settlers and Native peoples. Unlike a lot of places in the country where trading posts gradually morphed into towns and cities the site of the modern day park has stayed as pristine wilderness. The biggest draw to Delnor Wiggins Pass is that it has some of the cleanest and most pristine natural beaches in the entire state. Unlike a lot of Florida beaches this one offers unobstructed views and plenty of wilderness to explore.
Whether you’re looking to explore nature trails or relax on the beach you’ll have plenty to enjoy. The nature trails at this park cut into deep Florida wilderness and if you’re lucky you may be able to spot some of the state’s rarest animals or at least be able to relax in the shade of some native trees. If you’re looking for some fun to have with your family, this state park is open to all types of watersports including swimming, fishing, scuba diving, snorkeling, kayaking, canoeing, or paddle boarding. No matter what adventure you’re looking for there are plenty of services available for you to enjoy. At the very least this beautiful park is the perfect place to lay down and relax whether you need to take a breather or just want to take in a beautiful Florida sunset.
