On a recent trip to the Big Island of Hawaii for our 8th Annual Clinical Issues in Primary Care Conference, we discovered a unique find amidst the lush landscapes and volcanic scenery of the Kohala Coast&mdash;Islander Sake Brewery Hawaii.
Located in the clubhouse of the Hapuna Golf Course, the brewery is a fusion of Japanese tradition and Hawaiian charm, creating a unique and unforgettable experience for visitors, whether or not they have an appreciation for sake. During our visit, we had the pleasure of touring the brewery, tasting their excellent sake, and learning about the history of sake making in Japan and in Hawaii.
<h2>A Warm Welcome and a Rich History</h2>

As we sampled the offerings, Tama entertained us with tales of sake's origins, tracing its roots back over a thousand years in Japan. He explained how the art of sake brewing has been meticulously preserved and passed down through generations. Tama also highlighted the Hawaii's long yet abandoned history with sake and its rebirth with the founding of Islander Sake.
Islander Sake Brewery, however, brings a unique twist to this ancient craft. Founded with the vision of creating premium sake using local Hawaiian ingredients, the brewery represents a beautiful blend of cultural traditions. Tama shared how the pristine waters of Hawaii and the unique climate of the Big Island contribute to the distinct flavor profile of their sake, making it unlike any other.
<h2>Meet the Master Brewer: Chiaki Takahashi</h2>

One of the highlights of our visit was meeting Chiaki Takahashi, the master brewer behind Islander Sake. Chiaki's journey to becoming a master brewer is as inspiring as the sake she crafts. Originally a medical researcher, Chiaki's analytical mind and scientific background were instrumental in her transition to sake brewing. During a tour of the brewery, it was easy to see that her dedication to precision and quality is evident in every step of the brewing process.
Chiaki walked us through the intricate process of sake production, from selecting the finest Japanese and California rice to the careful fermentation and aging stages. She explained how the brewery combines traditional Japanese techniques with innovative methods to create their signature sake. Each bottle reflects Chiaki's meticulous attention to detail and her passion for perfection.
<h2>The Sake Tasting Experience</h2>
No visit to Islander Sake Brewery would be complete without a tasting session. In the tasting room, which overlooked the greens of the Hapuna Golf Course and the blue ocean beyond, we had the opportunity to sample a variety of their sake offerings, each with its unique flavor and aroma. The delicate balance of sweetness, acidity, and umami in their sake is a testament to the craftsmanship and dedication of the brewing team.
One of our favorites was the Junmai Daiginjo, a premium sake with a smooth, clean taste and a hint of fruity notes. Another standout was the Nigori sake, with its creamy texture and rich, complex flavor. As we sipped each sample, Tama provided insights into the characteristics of the sake, enhancing my appreciation for the artistry involved in its creation.

Juneau, the capital of Alaska, is a popular spot for tourists and adventurers alike to stop and see, drawing in visitors from around the world.&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juneau,_Alaska" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Juneau, Alaska</a>&nbsp;is known for its stunning wilderness, glaciers, and wildlife, including the endangered bald eagle among many other stunning species. Juneau is unique in the fact that no roads lead to the city. Juneau is only accessible by plane or by boat. In fact, Juneau is a popular destination for cruise ships, with a large and active port into the city. Juneau has everything from cafes and coffee shops to souvenir shops complete with Alaska memorabilia and more. Whether you are looking to take a stroll through this unique U.S. city, do some hiking, or travel up to the edge of a glacier, Juneau has it all.
Interestingly enough, Juneau is actually the&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juneau,_Alaska" target="_blank" rel="noopener">second largest capital</a>&nbsp;in the country by area, bigger than the area of Delaware and Rhode Island combined.

<h3>Juneau Recommendations</h3>
While Juneau can be visited year round, the summer months of May through September are especially spectacular. Here are the&nbsp;top five must-see stops&nbsp;in Juneau. Be sure to add these stops to your list when visiting the capital of Alaska!
<h3>1. Tracy Arm Fjord</h3>
When visiting the capital of Alaska, one must-see is the Tracy Arm Fjord, a 30-plus mile fjord located near the city. Take a boat for an up close and personal view of the&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tracy_Arm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">fjord</a>&nbsp;with the breathtaking views of the Twin Sawyer blue glaciers, waterfalls and more. Many tour companies offer an up-close look of the falls and glaciers, including a guided boat ride through the fjord. <h3>2. Mendenhall Glacier</h3>
Another must-see in Juneau is the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/tongass/about-forest/offices/?cid=stelprdb5400800" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Mendenhall Glacier</a>. The Mendenhall Glacier is a 13 mile long glacier located within the city limits. You can take in stunning sites of the glacier as well as large ice chunks that have broken off from the glacier in the surrounding lake. Also, be sure to stop by the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.alaska.org/detail/mendenhall-glacier-visitor-center" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center</a>&nbsp;for more information, photos through the years and more. <h3>3. Taku Glacier</h3>
Another must-see glacier is the&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taku_Glacier" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Taku Glacier</a>. The Taku Glacier is the deepest and thickest &ldquo;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taku_Glacier" target="_blank" rel="noopener">alpine temperate glacier</a>&rdquo; in the world. This glacier is 4,845 feet thick and about 36 miles long. It is mostly located in the boundaries of the Tongass National Forest
<h3>4. Alaska State Museum</h3>
The&nbsp;<a href="https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g31020-d105041-Reviews-Alaska_State_Museum-Juneau_Alaska.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Alaska State Museum</a>&nbsp;is also located in Juneau. The museum showcases a number of exhibits and pieces that tell the story of Alaska, including its history and rich heritage. The winter hours of the museum are Tuesday through Saturday, 10:00 am until 4:00 pm. General admission is $7.00, senior admission is $6.00 and children 18 and under are free. Top 5 Must-See’s in Juneau, Alaska

When it comes to visiting the Palm Coast area of Florida, the <a href="https://www.floridastateparks.org/park/bulow-plantation" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Bulow Plantation Ruins Historic State Park</a> is not to be missed. Located in Flagler Beach, this historic state park showcases the ruins of a pre-Civil War plantation and sugar mill. At its prime, it was the largest plantation in East Florida. Today, you can visit the site and learn about Florida and America&rsquo;s fascinating past.
<h3>Major Charles Bulow&nbsp;</h3>
In 1821, Major Charles Bulow purchased 4,675 acres of wilderness bordering a waterway that is now called Bulow Creek. He cleared 2,200 acres and planted sugar cane, cotton, rice, and indigo. The plantation came to an abrupt end at the outbreak of the Second Seminole War. In 1836, a band of raiding Seminole Indians, resisting their removal to the West, looted and burned the plantation. It never recovered. Today, the coquina walls (made up of crushed seashells) and a few chimneys of the sugar mill remain standing as a monument to the rise and fall of the sugar plantations of East Florida.
Bulow Creek is recognized as a State Canoe Trail. Each bend of the channel reveals new scenery and opportunity for wildlife sightings, including the occasional bald eagles and Florida manatees. Canoes can be rented by the day or hour from the park office, which can also provide a map.
A small picnic area, complete with grills, is located along the scenic Bulow Creek. There is a screened pavilion available for reservations for larger groups or parties. This pavilion has become quite popular for family reunions and birthday events.
<h3>The Bulow Woods Trail</h3>
The Bulow Woods Trail is a 6.8 mile hiking trail that runs from the Fairchild Oak in Bulow Creek State Park to Bulow Plantation Ruins State Historic Site. The northern section near Bulow Ruins is recommended for half-day hikes. Wildlife such as deer, owls, and raccoons are commonly seen. The hiking trail is open for day use from 8:30 am to sunset.
The park is open from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm daily. The entrance fee is $4 per vehicle with up to eight people. Please check the website for any changes to times or fees. The Sugar Mill Ruins is listed on the National Register of Historic Sites. The Interpretive Center has original artifacts and exhibits on Bulow Plantation.

Palm Coast, Florida - Destinations on Land

Kiawah Island is well known for its relaxing beaches, Southern charm, and family fun but perhaps its best-known secret is that it is one of the best places in the world to see dolphins in their natural habitat.&nbsp;
You don&rsquo;t have to travel as far down south as Florida or plan an exotic getaway for the chance to get in in touch with these charismatic creatures. If you decide to join us for our annual Continuing Education Company Primary Care CME conference in Kiawah, you&rsquo;re almost guaranteed to see the legendary bottlenose dolphin as they swim in play in the shallow tides if you know the right place to look.
Besides being the most widely recognized dolphin species on Earth, the bottlenose is celebrated for its intelligence, ingenuity, and curious charm. It&rsquo;s hard not to fall in love with these animals whether you&rsquo;ve seen them performing at your local zoo or have been lucky enough to spot them in the wild. Thanks to environmental protection programs and advances in marine biology and ocean exploration we are learning more and more about these creatures as time goes on. Kiawah is one of the best places to see these dolphins in their natural habitat because it lacks the noise and traffic that a lot of other tourist destinations have. The overall relaxing atmosphere isn&rsquo;t just ideal for families looking for a bit of serenity on their vacation but it makes the dolphins a lot less shy to approach the land.
<h3>Strand feeding</h3>
Silence isn&rsquo;t the only draw dolphins have to the island. The shallow waters and abundant sandbars make it one of the most ideal places to witness one of the rarest dolphin behaviors on the planet, strand feeding. <a href="https://www.kiawahisland.org/dolphin-strand-feeding/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Strand feeding</a> is a recently documented learned behavior unique to the bottlenose and takes place when a group of dolphins begins to herd a school of fish or shrimp into shallower and shallower water either near a sandbar or beach. Once the school is trapped with no place to escape the dolphins take turns launching themselves out of the water pushing the fish or shrimp onto the shore where they are devoured. It can be a little harrowing to see dolphins flopping on the dry land but they are far from helpless. After watching the behavior of their elders the youngsters quickly take to the feeding frenzy and are able to navigate back into the water with ease. What makes witnessing strand feeding so special isn&rsquo;t just its surreal beauty but the fact that it demonstrates intelligence and ingenuity rarely seen outside of primates.
If you&rsquo;re looking to watch for dolphins yourself while on vacation you&rsquo;ll get plenty of opportunities either on your own or with a professional guide. You are more than welcome to go searching for the dolphins but be aware that it is against the law to approach, provoke, and feed them in the wild but if one approaches you, you&rsquo;re more than welcome to stay just let the dolphin make the rules. If you want to watch for dolphins and stretch your legs two of the best places to see them are <a href="https://andellinn.com/blog/where-to-see-dolphins-on-kiawah-island/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Beach Walker County Park</a> where they&rsquo;re often seen passing from one place to another or <a href="https://andellinn.com/blog/where-to-see-dolphins-on-kiawah-island/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Captain Sam&rsquo;s Inlet</a> a few hours before or after low tide where they are often seen strand feeding. If you&rsquo;re wanting more of an independent adventure you&rsquo;re more than welcome to <a href="https://kiawahresort.com/recreation/paddling-tours/kayak-rentals/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">rent a kayak</a> and explore the muddy inlets and marshes yourself as you search for these amazing creatures and spot all the other amazing wildlife.

Cruise Around Charleston Bay

Taking a walk through an old cemetery isn&rsquo;t exactly at the top of everyone&rsquo;s must-do vacation activities, but if you&rsquo;re brave enough to take a trek through Charleston&rsquo;s legendary <a href="https://www.visit-historic-charleston.com/magnolia-cemetery-charleston.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Magnolia Cemetary</a> you&rsquo;ll get the chance to learn about the history of the city in a memorable albeit unorthodox way. Besides being one of the largest cemeteries in the country, Magnolia cemetery is also one of the oldest public graveyards in the country. Originally built on the grounds of a rice plantation known as Magnolia Umbra, the land was designated to house the growing number of the dead as Charleston&rsquo;s population began to grow.
<a href="https://www.visit-historic-charleston.com/magnolia-cemetery-charleston.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Magnolia Cemetary</a> was designed by architect Edward C Jones and dedicated in 1850. The grounds were designed as a rural or garden cemetery a popular choice in the nineteenth century. Although large plots of land with elaborate gravestones, statues, and mausoleums are incredibly common today they were a brand new design in the 1800s. The so-called garden cemetery came about due to a large number of different factors including the growing number of populations in cities across the United States and Europe, overcrowding of graves in small churchyards and cramped crypts, a newfound wealth of the middle class, and concern of hygiene. <a href="http://www.magnoliacemetery.net/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Magnolia Cemetery</a> was designed to be a comforting place to house the city&rsquo;s dead with scenic paths and plenty of trees for shade. As the city began to grow so too did the graveyard which now numbers over 35,000 separate graves.
Many of the city&rsquo;s most famous residents including politicians, artists, authors, soldiers, community leaders, and criminals are buried here. Some of the most famous include the former governor and congressman William Aiken Jr., community leader and first Christian temperance president of South Carolina Sallie F. Chapman, and Judge Julius Waties Waring who played a pivotal role in numerous cases associated with the Civil Rights Movement. Other graves include famous Southern authors like John Benett known for his children&rsquo;s books and illustrations, Frank Bunker Gilbreth Jr. authors of Cheaper by the Dozen, and Josephine Lyons Scott Pinckney who led a literary Southern revival after the first world war. The cemetery is also known to house numerous graves of soldiers such as marine engineer and submarine designer Horace Lawson Hunley, numerous prominent confederate generals, and the graves of unknown soldiers. The grounds aren&rsquo;t just home to Americans the site is also the burial place of a few British navy personnel who died fighting alongside American soldiers during World War Two. Besides holding an historical importance as the resting place of many of the city&rsquo;s most famous residents the grounds also served as a camp for Union forces as they seized the city during the latter days of the Civil War. Because of <a href="https://www.visit-historic-charleston.com/magnolia-cemetery-charleston.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Magnolia Cemetary&rsquo;s</a> age and long-standing importance to the city of Charleston it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978 and continues to house the city&rsquo;s dead to this day.

Take a Tour through Magnolia Cemetery If You Dare!

Located in the heart of Charleston&rsquo;s historic center on Magazine Street, the decrepit walls of <a href="https://www.charlestoncvb.com/plan-your-trip/tours-attractions~204/walking-tours~1160/charleston-haunted-jail-tour~9972.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Old Charleston Jail</a> stand out like a ruined gothic castle amongst the quaint beauty of the city. If these ancient walls could talk you could only imagine the kinds of stories they would tell you about the numerous convicts and prisoners who lived and died here cramped within their tiny stone cells as the world passed them on outside. In operation, for well over a century the old prison walls have witnessed the development of the nation that constructed it, the war that almost split it into two, a world war, and the start of another one before finally being decommissioned in 1939.
Throughout its tenure as a prison complex, the <a href="https://www.bulldogtours.com/tours/charleston-haunted-jail-tour/3" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Old Charleston Jail</a> held numerous prisoners in its impenetrable stone belly including the city&rsquo;s most notorious murderers, pirates, and thieves. Among the first of these infamous residents was alleged serial killer Lavina Fisher. Fisher along with her husband supposedly lured lonely travelers to their hotel, poisoned them, and robbed them for all they were worth before disposing of their bodies. Although unproven, contemporary accounts of the time allege that Lavina may have been the one responsible for a string of mysterious disappearances in the area. Even though she may have gotten away with being America&rsquo;s first female serial killer, Fisher&rsquo;s crimes eventually caught up with her and she was tried alongside her husband and accomplices for highway robbery and she was convicted and hanged in 1820.
Another notable resident of the time was Denmark Vesey. Originally born into slavery in Bermuda he made his way to the United States, purchased his freedom, and lived and worked as a skilled carpenter in the city. Vesey was an important church leader and African American community organizer who led a successful business. Shortly after purchasing the freedom of his wife and children tragedy would strike the Vesey family. For several years Denmark had met with slaves in secret meetings and would strategically plan to help others win their freedom. Tensions began to rise between the church Vesey founded with the rest of Charleston and an alleged plot was discovered that showed Denmark was planning on leading a revolt of thousands of slaves across numerous plantations. Vesey was tried and convicted of his plot after two slaves reported alerted the plan to their masters. He was brought to the <a href="https://ghostcitytours.com/charleston/haunted-places/charleston-jail/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Old Charleston Jail</a> along with his accomplices where he spent long hours staring outside the windows of the prison&rsquo;s octagonal towers before tragically being hanged in 1822.
As the city of Charleston began to expand rapidly over the economic boom of the mid-nineteenth century there was a growing need to expand the jail to house the growing number of criminals. The jail would gain many of its most iconic features during an 1850s renovation by architects Barbot and Seyle who added many Neo-Romanesque features and completed an additional wing to house the newly arrived convicts. As the Civil War broke out in 1861 and split the nation in two, Charleston proved to be an important economic and strategic city for the Confederacy. The jail would begin to house numerous captured Union soldiers and officers who could only wait in anticipation from inside the stone walls for the war to eventually come to a steady end. After the Civil War, the jail went back to housing the city&rsquo;s convicts for approximately fifty more years. As the city continued to expand in the twentieth century the need to maintain such an elaborate but relatively small prison proved to be too expensive and inefficient for the city to continue to support. In 1939 the <a href="https://www.charlestoncvb.com/plan-your-trip/tours-attractions~204/walking-tours~1160/charleston-haunted-jail-tour~9972.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Old Charleston Jail</a> was decommissioned and the remaining convicts were transferred to a larger facility. Numerous plans were drafted on what to do with the old building but none were ever brought to fruition and it sat empty for well over sixty years before efforts began to restore it was started in the early 2000s.
