Explore the Beautiful Glaciers of Alaska
Alaska is revered for its pristine natural beauty which extends from its majestic mountains, large alpine forests, crystal clear lakes, and numerous species of wildlife. Among all the natural beauty what continues to draw people in and to return to this wonderful state is the enormous glaciers.
Alaska is known for these wonderful structures because of its location and natural temperature. Glaciers are formed very slowly over time and are not just large pieces of ice. Glaciers form when large amounts of snow build up, melt, and freeze into ice. As this process repeats over and over through millennia and as the glaciers get larger they eventually start to move. Glaciers have shaped much of the geography of the United States and elsewhere as they slowly move across an area to carve out the landscape.
Glaciers impact not only geographical topography but also oceanic chemistry and temperature. Some glaciers have unique shapes known as calves, where large sheets of ice have broken off into the water to become icebergs. Many Continuing Education Company attendees have seen this force of nature right from their cruise ships! These chunks of ice travel along ocean currents and if they’re big enough can end up very far from their original location.
One of the best parts about visiting Alaska is being able to see these wonderful structures first hand and up close. It is only by standing right next to a glacier that one can appreciate its majestic blue color. This blue color is a result of the internal structure of the glacier itself. The rapid melting and freezing of snow into ice creates a crystal structure that absorbs red and white light while reflecting and scattering the blue.
