If you’re to explore some local history and get a spectacular view then you should visit the Point Loma Lighthouse. Completed in 1855, the small lighthouse is located on a site over 400 feet above sea level. The impressive height of the location actually proved to be a fatal flaw for the lighthouse as clouds and fog often obscured the light when it was needed most. Nevertheless, the lighthouse served the city for 36 years before eventually being replaced by a new and safer lighthouse in 1891. Today the history of the lighthouse and the keepers who lived there can be explored all year round.
Another notable site to visit is the Cabrillo National Monument. This beautiful sand white sculpture commemorates the 16th-century explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo’s voyages and discoveries. Perhaps Cabrillo’s most notable accomplishment was being the first European to step foot on America’s west coast that eventually culminated in Spain’s colonization and undeniable influence on the city today. Besides the monument, the grounds around the sculpture are also worth an exploration. If you’re here during a clear day then you should peer down into the iconic tidepools of Point Loma.
