Journey through the Life of an American Author
Ernest Hemingway is one of the most celebrated and influential American authors.
Throughout his writing career, his talent crossed multiple mediums including novels, short stories, and poetry. One of the numerous places Hemingway chose to live in his life was in Key West. When living in the Keys he was able to create some of his best known works in a home that would later become one of the most iconic landmarks of Key West.
The Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum
The Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum is the largest residential building in Key West and its history dates back to before the author was born. The building was originally constructed in 1851 by architect and marine scavenger Asa Tift. The home was purchased in 1931 by Hemingway shortly after he completed A Farewell to Arms. Hemingway lived here full time before moving to Cuba in 1940 and filled the house with a collection of European furniture collected from his years in Paris, works of art, and taxidermy made from his hunts in Africa.
The museum has preserved the home as Hemingway and his family had lived in it and guests can see every room including the studio where he did most of his writing. After Hemingway’s death, his sons eventually sold the estate, which was purchased in the early sixties by Bernice Dixon. She converted it into the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum in 1964 and her family still owns and operates the museum today.
The museum offers full tours to guests who are guided through as they learn about the author. For guests who may not be as interested in literary history, the site is also notable for its architectural and landscape beauty. Besides its pristine aesthetic, the home, is also well known for the forty cats that live there. Many of these cats have extra toes, which Hemingway thought was lucky. The cats are also notable because they are the direct descendants from the ones that Hemingway had when he lived there. So in some ways, the spirit of Hemingway still lives on in the estate.
The museum is open all year including holidays from 9 am to 5 pm, follow the link to view the current admission price. The site also doubles as a bookstore which sells Hemingway’s entire bibliography, artwork, as well as apparel and books relating to information on Key West.
Whether you are interested in taking a journey through literary history or just enjoy architecture tours and nature, the Ernest Hemingway House and Museum is one of the most recommended places to visit in Key West. The site is located in the historic district and directions to the museum.
