South Carolina Aquarium: One of the Top Must-Sees When Visiting Charleston
Charleston, South Carolina is home to many popular attractions that draw in visitors and South Carolina locals alike. Charleston, a port city, is mainly known for its antebellum architecture, complete with pastel-colored houses and its streets made of cobblestone. This iconic city offers a blend of old and new, creating its own unique look and style.
When visiting Charleston, South Carolina, a must-see to add to the to-do list is the South Carolina Aquarium. The South Carolina Aquarium is located along the Charleston Harbor, a historic site. The aquarium boasts over 10,000 plant and animal species. One of its most stunning exhibits is what is known as the Great Ocean Tank. The tank is three stories tall and has over 700 animals inside of it. It also holds over 385,000 gallons of water.
Some of the animals you will be able to see during a visit to the aquarium include American Alligators, River Otters, Purple Sea Urchin and more. Another awesome part of the aquarium is that it has a Touch Tank where visitors can get up close and personal with the wildlife. Touch a stingray, horseshoe crab, and other animals that call the South Carolina Aquarium home.
In addition to offering world-class exhibits and a memorable experience to visitors, the aquarium also operates a sea turtle hospital. Working in conjunction with The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, wounded or stranded sea turtles are brought to the aquarium and nursed back to health before being returned to the wild. The average stay of a sea turtle is 7-8 months to make a recovery and be strong enough to go back out to sea. Visitors at the aquarium can get a behind-the-scenes look at the Sea Turtle Care Center as well.
Visitors can become a Sea Turtle Guardian by making a reocurring or annual gift to help fund the Sea Turtle Care Center’s rescue efforts. Conservation and education are big components of the aquarium’s mission as well, making it more than just a place to see fish in a tank. What makes the South Carolina Aquarium so unique is that it is an advocacy organization committed to protecting and preserving the great creatures that call the ocean home.
The aquarium is open every day from 9 am to 4 pm with exceptions for holidays (hours subject to change). Visitors are able to purchase one-time tickets or purchase a membership for frequent visits. For more information and admission pricing for the South Carolina Aquarium, click here.
