Spend a Beautiful Day in Juneau
If you’re ever planning on taking a trip to see beautiful Juneau then don’t plan on driving in because Juneau is only accessible by boat or plane. Even though this may seem peculiar to the city’s many visitors you’ll find that it’s a very hospitable and welcoming place. While you may not be able to get your car there, Juneau is a very walkable city with a rich history.
Juneau was originally nothing more than land in the dense wilderness of Alaska until Joseph “Joe” Juneau and his colleague Richard Harris settled there in search of gold. With the help of some Auk chiefs, they were eventually able to find gold nuggets and eventually created a mining settlement that grew into the city we know today. Despite only having a population of about 30,000 and only being 45 miles across the city is very modern and welcoming with plenty of tourists visiting from all around the world.
Like many other places in Alaska, people are drawn to the scenic views of the city and the pristine wilderness that it offers. Juneau is home to over 300 different species of birds, numerous species of fish, whales, and bears. Juneau is also home to an estimated 20,000 bald eagles so visiting would give you one of the best opportunities to witness this majestic animal in its natural habitat.
One of the best ways to explore the city is by hiking on one of the numerous trails around the city. There are over 130 miles of trails around Juneau that weave through both the city and the surrounding wilderness. One of the best strenuous but rewarding paths to take is the Mount Roberts Loop which will take you up to a mountain peak 1800 feet above sea level and through numerous different sub-alpine environments. A trip to Juneau would not be complete without seeing Mendenhall Glacier and one of the best ways to see this natural wonder away from the large crowds is taking the East Glacier Loop which will give you pristine views of not only the glacier but also the surrounding beauty of Juneau as well. No matter what trail you choose, Juneau has some of the best in the entire world.
After all that hiking you may be in the mood for a special treat. If you’re in the mood for a unique drink you should look into visiting The Narrows Bar which offers not only local beer and spirits but drinks from all around the world. What makes this bar special, however, is not just the drinks that they serve made fresh with local twists but also the fact that they are the only bar in the world that serves drinks with actual Alaskan glacial ice. A nice end of the day when traveling with Continuing Education Company’s Cruise CME.
