Take a Deep Dive into The Big Island of Hawaii
The Big Island of Hawaii is a sunny, tropical oasis known around the world for its volcanoes, world class surfing, stunning beachfronts and more. The Big Island of Hawaii is one of eight main islands that make up the state and consists of a little over 4,000 square miles of area.
The island of Hawaii makes up the largest island in the United States and offers a number of unique adventures and experiences for locals and visitors alike to enjoy.
Water Activities
Hawaii offers visitors plenty of water activities such as swimming, snorkeling and surfing. While the number of exciting activities to do on the main island is endless, one of the most spectacular things to participate in is a manta ray night dive. Wait until the sun goes down for an amazing underwater experience! Hawaii’s manta rays are a spectacular sight, with wingspans reaching 18 feet long. Join a tour to get up close and personal with the manta rays by catching them during their dinner time after dark.
Manta rays feed on plankton, small organisms. On the Big Island, a number of tour companies offer a breathtaking experience to witness this phenomenon first-hand as the manta rays soar through the water to feed on the plankton. The manta rays feed on the plankton by opening their mouths wide and swooping through the ocean water.
Plankton are attracted to light, which brings in the manta rays to feed on them. Divers can attract the plankton by diving with a light, attracting the plankton, and in turn, attracting the manta rays. For those who are not divers, you can still participate in the experience! Many tour companies in the area also offer the option to snorkel on the water’s surface, holding on to floating boards and submerging your head to take part in the action. One thing to note is that it is important to book your spots in advance, as it is a very popular activity on the island. The manta ray night dive and snorkel is an incredibly cool experience that you will not want to miss!
Another Activities
Another breathtaking experience is taking a helicopter ride around the Big Island. Go over volcanic craters, waterfalls, mountains and more with a 50,000 foot view. Helicopter tours provide you with an opportunity to view things and get a perspective that is hard to get from ground level. Helicopter rides can be pricey, starting on the low end at $150 per hour, but visitors say that it is absolutely worth it for a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
There are both open air, doorless helicopter tours as well as tours with the doors on. Selecting doors or no doors is a matter of preference, and the price can vary. There may also be some restrictions to consider before booking a helicopter tour, such as a weight limit and age restrictions. It is important to shop around for the best deals and read safety information and any ride restrictions by visiting tour companies’ websites or calling.
