The Colorful Rainbow Row of Charleston
Nestled in the heart of Charleston’s rich historic streets is the iconic Rainbow Row. A stretch of thirteen houses on East Bay Street that are all painted warm and bright colors. The homes date back to the late 1700s when they were built by merchants to house both their families and their businesses. After falling in disrepair over the years they were eventually restored in the 1930s and painted their iconic colors. Their rich history and colors make them one of Charleston’s most iconic and photographed landmarks. There are numerous ways that tourists can see these houses including a bus tour, a walking tour, or a horse and carriage tour.
Another great place to visit during the day is the City Market. The market has numerous different souvenirs for sale including pictures, paintings, and local crafts. When going through the vendors keep an eye out for a green seal which certifies that the items were made in Charleston. One of the most unique souvenirs for sale is the sweetgrass basket, which are still handmade by local artisans.
