The Historically Haunted Cemeteries of New Orleans

One of the most iconic parts of New Orleans are the morbidly bizarre and beautiful mazes of mausoleums that make up the city’s cemeteries.

These graves are a rich albeit strange tradition of the city that dates back to the very first European settlers who made their homes there over three centuries ago. Instead of being buried below ground, the dead are entombed in mausoleums because New Orleans is at sea level is surrounded by water. Due to the city’s frequent floods and hurricanes, any bodies that would be buried would rise to the surface and float away whenever the streets would flood. Over time the above-ground tombs have become more elaborate and often hold entire generations of families who have called the city home.

While it may seem morbid, a trip to New Orleans would not be complete without learning about the amazing history behind these tombs and the wonderful people who have once called the city home. There are numerous different tours available and several unique cemeteries to explore. Learning about the city’s unique history is an interesting activity for you if you attend the Continuing Education Company’s New Orleans Metabolic CME conference.

If you are planning on taking a tour then you should consider visiting St. Louis Cemetary which is both the most famous cemetery in New Orleans and the oldest. The graveyard is home to the mausoleum’s of some of the city’s most famous residents including numerous jazz musicians and Civil Rights leaders. Perhaps the graveyard is the most famous for having the mausoleum of Mari Laveau the voodoo queen and the future resting place of Nicholas Cage. Check the website on how to visit this iconic place as there are rules in place if you want to take a tour. If you’re interested taking a tour with an added paranormal and haunted twist than you should consider booking with Bloody Mary’s Tours who pride themselves on being both equally spooky and historically accurate. If you’re interested in donating to a great cause and supporting the wonderful city of New Orleans than you should consider booking a trip with Save Our Cemeteries. They are the only non-profit graveyard tour in the city and are among the most highly rated.
