America’s Oldest Port
St. Augustine is one of the most historically rich towns in the United States and has the honor of being America’s oldest port city and dates back to the 1500s when the Spanish first settled North America.
The town is home to many old buildings and has been designated a National Heritage Area for its historical importance and natural beauty.
St. Augustine Lighthouse
One of the most remarkable buildings in the town is the St. Augustine Lighthouse, which has been in operation in one way or another since the 1500s. The building took its current shape in the 1870s when it was modernized and expanded to house a permanent keeper. The lighthouse continued to operate this way until the 1950s when keepers began to live offsite.
Today, the lighthouse is fully restored and offers guests both a tour of the lighthouse and a maritime museum where guests can learn all about its remarkable history through the centuries. The lighthouse towers over the coast at 165 feet and visitors can climb over 200 steps to the top to look at one of the few surviving antique lenses and get a spectacular view of the ocean.
St. Augustine is home to many other amazing buildings and other historical locations. One of the best and most relaxed ways for tourists to see all of these amazing locations is with The Old Town Trolley Tour.
The Old Town Trolley Tour
This guided tour will tell guests all about the amazing history of the town and make stops at 23 different locations. The trolley will take guests to Castillo de San Marcos, which is the oldest surviving fort of its kind, as well as the Alligator Farm, Lighthouse and Maritime Museum, the St. Augustine History Museum, and many other exciting locations. Visitors can stay at any of these locations as long as they want as trolleys continuously run all day.
Ghost and Gravestone Tour
For a more thrilling adventure, tourists can make a reservation for the Ghost and Gravestone Tour which takes visitors to some purportedly haunted locations. On this night tour, guests will visit two cemeteries and will be told the story of the town’s chaotic and thrilling past.
Other points of interest on the trip include a visit to Potter’s Wax Museum, where visitors will be given an exclusive retelling of the final moments the pirate Andrew Ransom before his execution and a visit to the Old Drug Store. The tour ends at the Old Jail, which is listed both on Florida’s and the National Registry of the most haunted places. This tour would be a thrilling way to end the day after attending one of the many Continuing Education Company’s Palm Coast Primary Care CME Conferences.
