Everglades Wonder Gardens and National Park
This historic attraction is teeming with life from tropical plants to exotic birds flying overhead, which makes you feel like you are miles and miles from any city. The reptiles are fascinating in their own right.
The Gardens is all about relaxation, but you'll likely learn a few things as well, including the incredible value the Everglades provide not only to the local ecosystem but also to the country. Here are some of the best things to do:
- Airboat Tours: Let the National Park Service take you out to see the area, including several location options for airboat tours, such as Coopertown, Everglades Safari Park, and Gator Park.
- Alligator Farm: There’s nothing quite like this riveting experience. You’ll take an airboat tour and watch a gator show.
- Skunk Ape Museum: The Skunk Ape Museum is a local thing, and you’ll love to learn the legend.
- Tamiami Trail Drive: Simply driving down the Tamiami Trail will give you the opportunity to see the Everglades up close and personal.

Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary
Quite the fascinating experience, the Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary takes you on a boardwalk tour through the ancient cypress forest that is so critical to the region’s ecosystem and history. While you’re exploring, you’ll spot rare wildlife and find yourself immersed in one of the most tranquil areas of the region. Start at the Audubon Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary visitor center to learn a bit about the area.
Lovers Key State Park
As a true beach city, Lovers Key State Park is a must-see for anyone visiting the area. The beaches and trails will sweep you away, helping you to relax in natural beauty. If you’re like many others, you’ll want to bring along a bike (you can rent one) or just hike and birdwatch. It will not disappoint. Our tip: The best time to visit is in the evening, as the sunsets are nothing short of breathtaking.
