Take a Walk through Beautiful Washington Oaks

Nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and the Matanzas River is 425 acres of pristine coastal beaches, lush forests, and exquisite gardens.

Washington Oaks Park was once a piece of land owned by a distant relative of George Washington before being owned by Louise and Owen Young. The Youngs were the ones who first created the park’s famous gardens in 1936 before donating the land to the state in 1965. The state of Florida decided to carry on their legacy and have been preserving the park, which hosts numerous guests ever since. The park remains very popular to this day and is open daily.

Washington Oaks Park

One of the most unique aspects of the park is long stretches of rocky beaches lined with boulders. These boulders are a type of rock known as coquina and give the beaches a rare beauty that separates them from any other beaches in Florida. As guests move deeper into the park, the ocean scenery gradually blends into forests consisting of oak, hickory, and magnolia trees.

These trees are admired not only for their size and beauty but also for the shade that they provide in the summer heat. As guests hike along the many forest pathways or ride their bikes along the many trails they will eventually encounter what the park is most famous for. Nestled in the forest landscape are 20 acres of sculpted gardens. This lush oasis is blended right into the landscape and are meticulously crafted from both native and exotic species.

This unique blend of species has attracted numerous different species of birds of paradise. Many former attendees of the Continuing Education Company’s Palm Coast conferences have stated that the cool walk through the forest and seeing these rare birds was one of their favorite parts of the trip.

Whether you are interested in taking a long romantic walk across the beach, a gentle bike ride through the forest, or a walkthrough of some famous gardens there is something for everyone at Washington Oaks Park. By giving a park a visit, guests are not only helping to preserve some of the most beautiful landscapes in Florida, but you are also helping to preserve these unique gardens for generations to come.
