Visit Victoria's Beautiful Butchart Gardens
Located just north of the city of Victoria lies the beautiful Butchart Gardens which has widely been recognized as one of the best gardens in the entire world. Boasting almost a thousand different plant varieties across fifty-five exquisite acres it’s no wonder this site draws in over a million visitors every year from all around the world. The history of the gardens dates back to just over a hundred years ago when Japanese landscape designer Isaboro Kishida was invited to the city to construct a tea garden for Esquimalt Georg Park. Garden lover and wife of local cement manufacturer Jennie Butchart soon took notice of the garden’s beauty and set about transforming the old limestone quarry near their home into a sunken garden.
The quarry’s transformation into a peaceful oasis soon brought numerous visitors to the Butchart home, who all wanted to get the chance to see the famous site in person. Due to the immense popularity of their garden, the Burtcharts renamed their home “Benvenuto” meaning “welcome” in Italian and began beautifying the grounds around their estate even more. One of the first additions was the establishment of an Italian garden followed soon after by a Medditarrian garden and perhaps the most radical conversion of their family’s vegetable garden into a luxurious rose garden. The expansion of Butchart Gardens did not end with Jennie who passed it lovingly to her grandson in 1933 who dedicated his entire life to expanding and promoting the grounds to Victoria’s numerous visitors.
As the grounds continued to bring numerous guests it too began to bloom like the many beautiful flowers which call the site home. Among the expansions and additions over the years include numerous bronze statues, a children’s garden, night lighting, and several fountains. With so much history and tradition behind the site, it is no wonder that Butchart Gardens was added to Canada’s list of national historic sites. If you decide to take a cruise through Alaska and take a stop off at Victoria be sure to take a stroll through these lovely gardens as you explore this amazing city.
