Visiting Charleston City Market
One of Charleston’s unique attractions is its city market. Since its $5.5 million makeover in 2011, Charleston City Market is now a hot must-see spot for locals and tourists alike. Boasting artisan shops and historic architecture, the Charleston City Market showcases the best of what Charleston has to offer.
When you visit Charleston City Market, you will be greeted by its Great Hall. The Great Hall is an 18,300 square foot corridor of vendors and small shops. Anchoring the Great Hall at its west end is the Historic Charleston Foundation, which offers hundreds of high quality products such as reproduction furniture and many books on the history of Charleston. You can check out the Great Hall’s list of vendors before you visit.
From sweetgrass baskets to gourmet food, the Charleston City Market buzzes with shoppers perusing vendors filled with unique, rare, and unexpected items. One of the unique artisans at Charleston City Market is the Gullah sweetgrass basketweavers. Sweetgrass basketry is one of the nation’s oldest handicrafts of African origin. For more than 300 years, the Gullah people have been weaving baskets using bulrush, which is a type of marsh grass that is found in the Lowcountry of Charleston. The Gullah people have been able to preserve their culture and heritage since their ancestors arrived through the slave trade of the 17th and 18th centuries. The sweetgrass basket-weaving artisans are an important part to maintaining this culture, and you can visit these artisans in the Charleston City Market.
Once you see these breathtaking baskets, you may also want to get a deeper understanding of the Gullah heritage. Check out Gullah Tours, which will take you on a two-hour guided charter bus tour around Charleston with lots of knowledge and cultural information about the Gullah people.
Charleston City Market has much to offer any visitor. It is open daily from 9:30 am until 6:00 pm. From April to December, the city market also offers a night market from every Friday and Saturday from 6:30 pm to 10:30 pm. From its historical beauty to one-of-a-kind artisans, Charleston City Market should definitely be on your list to visit while you are in Charleston.
