Wind Your Way Along the French Broad River
The French Broad River is the third oldest river in the world and carved the majestic Blue Ridge Mountains that surround the wonderful city of Asheville, North Carolina.
Besides its incredible age the river has another anomaly, it flows south to north against the grain of nearly every river around the world. Local millers relied on its powerful currents for energy and local industries used it for transportation. Even though traditional manufacturing has left the city of Asheville the need for the river lives on in the modern needs of industry. Asheville is very famous for its craft brewing industry and the river has a great reputation for being one of the cleanest natural sources of drinking water. In fact many locals will tell you that it’s perfectly safe to dip a cup into a nearby mountain stream and take a sip.
Besides its numerous industrial uses the French Broad River is a popular playground for locals and tourists.
