Birchwood Aquarium - A Look Under the Sea
Sunny San Diego, California is a city known for its prime location along the Pacific Ocean, located just south of Los Angeles above the Mexico border. San Diego’s warm climate and oceanfront make it an aquatic paradise. In addition to the draw the ocean brings for locals and visitors alike to swim and surf, San Diego’s ocean is also home to thousands of seafaring species.
Birch Aquarium at Scripps, also known as Birch Aquarium, is both the location of an aquarium open to the public as well as the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego. Started in 1903, The Scripps Institution of Oceanography is the oldest and largest research center for ocean science in the world. Both undergraduate and graduate students study the ocean and Earth science within the institution, including research through the laboratories located along the shore as well as vessels that go into the sea. The Old Scripps Building has been used since 1909-10 when it was constructed to study oceanographic research, making this building the single longest running oceanographic research center in the country. In 1982, the Old Scripps Building was declared a national historic landmark.
The Birch Aquarium is the public outreach center for the institution, offering visitors from around the world the chance to see the institution’s research up close and learn more about the magnificent creatures that call the ocean home. The Birch Aquarium has over 60 exhibits, including Leopard Sharks, Seahorses, and Giant Black Bass. There is a nursery filled with baby sea life, daily animal feedings, dive shows in the Giant Kelp Forest and outdoor excursions including snorkeling with the sharks and whale watching.
