Spotlight on San Diego: The Gaslamp Quarter & Little Italy

While you are visiting San Diego, be sure to check out its several unique neighborhoods and areas. Your first stop should be the Gaslamp Quarter and Little Italy.
Rising from 16 square-blocks in downtown San Diego, you’ll find the historic Gaslamp Quarter where Victorian-era buildings and modern skyscrapers house more than 200 of the city's finest restaurants, pubs, nightclubs, art galleries, and retails shops. You can spend an entire day in the Gaslamp Quarter, shopping at one of the many trendy boutiques that line the busy streets or in the outdoor mall, Horton Plaza.
Petco Park, located on the edge of downtown, is a great place to take in a baseball game. Not only is the park a great spot to watch a game, but you’ll also find some of San Diego’s favorite eateries and local craft beer on tap. Continue your exploration as you discover the colorful past of the former Stingaree District at the Gaslamp Museum at the Davis-Horton House, climb aboard the U.S.S. Midway Museum, ride the carousel and visit the candy store in Seaport Village, or catch the trolley for a quick ride to Balboa Park and the San Diego Zoo.
Also nearby is the Little Italy neighborhood. Little Italy is a lively neighborhood filled with cafes, restaurants, craft breweries, urban wineries, art galleries, boutiques, and even the beautiful Amici Park. Little Italy is also home to San Diego’s vibrant food and drink scene. A slew of chefs - including “Top Chef” alums - have gravitated towards Little Italy. You will see distinctive eateries, including Juniper & Ivy and Kettner Exchange. There are also established restaurants, such as Filippi’s Pizza Grotto, featuring an old-fashioned Italian dining experience along with a delicatessen and market.
Little Italy also features some great local boutiques where you can find unique clothing, jewelry, and small craft items, such as Rosa Mariposa. Every Saturday from 8 am until 2 pm, you can visit the Little Italy Mercato, which is a dynamic farmers market where locals shop for fresh produce along with gourmet goods, flowers, crafts, and food.
