See the Tallest Lighthouse in Florida
Located just outside of Daytona Beach on the southernmost point of the peninsula stands the majestic Ponce Inlet Lighthouse, the tallest lighthouse in Florida and one of the most well preserved in the country.
First completed in 1887 and fully operational later that same year, the lighthouse kept sailors and boats safe across their voyages along the Florida coast. The first lamp used was a kerosine lamp which had to be meticulously cared for by the lighthouse keeper. The kerosine lamp was soon replaced by a French-made Fresnel lens which still remains at the site today and is one of the best specimens of its kind in the world.
Ponce Inlet Lighthouse
Today the unique history of the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse can be explored by guests interested in the families who once called it home. The museum also offers a unique collection of Cuban rafts found along the beach from refugees fleeing the country in search of a better life in the United States. Perhaps the most thrilling part of the tour is climbing the 203 steps to the top of the 175-foot lighthouse and getting a 365-foot view of the Atlantic Ocean and Florida coast.
While you’re up there feel free to take as many pictures as you want and get a view of the iconic Fresnel lens. Once you’re done gazing at your spectacular view keep an eye out for Nellie. Nellie is the lighthouse cat and is considered an omen of good luck ever since the tradition of keeping one started over one hundred years ago.
Marine Science Center
Another unique aspect of the site is visiting the Marine Science Center. The center is dedicated to educated guests of all ages in a fun and interactive experience. While you are here you can learn about sea turtles, mangrove forests, and wildlife conservation.
