Snorkel, Scuba, or Hike around Mighty Molokini

According to ancient Hawaiian mythology, Molokini was once a beautiful goddess who fell in love with a man. The mighty goddess of fire and volcanos, Pele was also in love with the man and out of jealousy and rage split Molokini in two and turned her to stone.

History

There is in fact historical fact preserved in this old Hawaiian tale as the crescent-shaped islet of Molokini was formed approximately 230,000 years ago as the result of a volcanic eruption. The subsequent crater that formed is only one of three such structures in the entire world and while the islet and the crater were born out of fire and destruction it laid the foundation for numerous coral reefs that bring visitors from all around the world. Ancient Hawaiians used the site for fishing as numerous different fishing artifacts have been excavated from the area.

Molokini had another period of fire and destruction as it served as target practice for the United States Navy during World War II. Standing at only a half-mile long and three hundred feet wide the site was perfect for testing because of its resemblance to a battleship. Due to its natural beauty, the site was eventually selected for marine preservation in the 1970s where it continues to draw people toward its natural beauty.
